WHAT IS CORKSCREW THINKING?

WHAT IS CORKSCREW THINKING

A MINDSET AND APROACH

In it’s very simplest form Corkscrew Thinking is a mindset and approach that provides an alternative to a linear path and the phrase ‘we’ve always done it that way. Corkscrew Thinking should be seen as a plug-in that can connect to your problem solving toolkit, to allow you to look for new solutions that break status quo’s of established systems, processes and procedures. There are three main steps when taking a Corkscrew Thinking approach, starting with deconstructing a conventional idea/concept and then reconfiguring to develop a new solution and finally having the courage to implement a pioneer a new path.

STEP 1

GO AGAINST THE STATUS QUO AND DECONSTRUCT

The first key step to adopt a Corkscrew Thinking approach is to determine what status quo’s or traditional beliefs, systems or processes are potentially stopping you finding a solution to a question you’re looking to find an answer to. It’s then about understanding why these status quo’s are still in place and who or what are enforcing them (we call them restrictors). Once you have identified these key elements it’s then about breaking down the question and deconstruct it in a way that you truly understand what you’re trying to achieve.

STEP 2

BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR PROBLEMS AND RECONFIGURE

Once you’ve identified your chosen goal or destination it’s then about rewiring your mind and looking for new solutions, as many as you can. A Corkscrew Thinker will look at problems and obstacles from all angles and embrace a child’s mind free from preconceived ideas and restrictions. In this moment new solutions to old problems will be identified and created, pioneering new opportunities that are potentially untested and unproven, but hypothetically can provide the solutions to the questions you were looking to answer at the beginning of your journey.

restrictors

A restrictor is someone or something that enforces traditional approaches (family, friends, teachers, boss, government, business etc). Motives can be through fear of unknown or preconceived beliefs/traditions.

STEP 3

TAKE THE COURAGE TO IMPLEMENT

Coming up with new creative solutions to a traditional process or problem is great, but it counts for nothing if an idea remains just a concept or untested theory. To fully complete a Corkscrew Thinking loop it is imperative that the new solution is implemented, and that takes courage. It will take bravery and determination to stand up to the identified restrictors and follow the new path, to stand up and become a pioneer willing to change the status quo and tradition to forge new concepts, ideas and ultimately future innovation in all aspects of our lives.

have an open mind

We’re educated from a young age to conform and to keep within established rules, this can make looking for alternatives problematic. Corkscrew Thinking requires an open mind, to look through a new lens.

BE COURAGEOUS

Courage comes across a wide spectrum and can start with very small risk to much larger liabilities. It’s about starting within a safe zone and building confidence in your courage over time.
