Fixing the World of Fashion. One Duvet and One Smile at a Time.

My eyes couldn’t help but be drawn to a recent BBC feature about one creative entrepreneur and her brilliant business.

Silly Girl Club was officially founded by Nikki in 2015, fuelled by her love of cartoon bedsheets and her desire to give them a new lease of life. With over 10 years of sewing machine experience, Nikki turned her hand to turning these childhood memories into new pieces of fashion. (Dig a little deeper and you discover that the seed of this idea goes back to 2004 when she originally started recycling duvets).

Not only do her creations brighten up the dullest of days, but because they are made from recycled bedsheets, she is providing sustainable products to her growing community of customers and fans.

She has been able to utilise the power of social media and storytelling to connect with people on the other side of the world who not only buy her products but also send her duvets (some all the way from the USA) to be reimagined and given a new lease of life as a dress, a bumbag or a pocket tee…

What a brilliant example of Corkscrew Thinking in action

Her catalogue of clothes and accessories speaks endless volumes of creativity and the use of old duvets and bedsheets is the perfect example of tackling fast-fashion creatively and resourcefully.

You can’t help but smile when scrolling through her instagram page. Whether it’s your cup of tea or not, you can’t deny the joy of adults being allowed to continue embracing their inner peter-pan through the re-inventing of their favourite childhood duvets and memories.

What does Nikki make of having turned her hobby into a passion project and then into a booming business? Here’s her answer in her own words…

What I love about this answer is that you can feel Nikki’s excitement and passion for what she’s doing. But you also get a sense of the risk that she took by committing to work on Silly Girl Club full time.

We love what you are doing Nikki and wish you all the best of luck as you and your wonderful business continue to grow!
