PART ONE | FIND A VIRTUAL HOST

Most people don’t understand the value of sourcing your own Virtual Host, choosing instead to let a third party organisation take on the process of finding a host organisation for you, this is a HUGE mistake. Why spend hundreds of dollars for someone to introduce you to one of their connections, it’s unlikely that it will be the right company for you, only you can find a company that truly matches your own values, beliefs and career progression. In PART ONE we’ll work with you in identifying the type of organisation that gets you excited and help you develop your online self brand to wow the selected organisations. By learning the skill of identifying the right company match you’ll find it easier to find full time positions in the future – don’t underestimate the importance of this in your career development, don’t pay for shortcuts!

PART TWO | SECURING YOUR VIRTUAL INTERNSHIP

Once we’ve worked with you to identify your dream host organisation, we’ll then show you the tips and tricks of securing that virtual internship. You’ll learn how ineffective the traditional job search actually is and why it’s time to stop putting all your emphasis on a CV/Resume. You’ll be building an online presence and learning how to reach out to your selected host organisations to ensure the best chance of success. We’ll look at the importance of EQ (Emotional Intelligence) and creativity in the negotiation process of landing a virtual internship host and how it will open up a new world of opportunities.

‘FINDING MY OWN INTERNSHIP HAS HELPED ME TO BECOME MORE CONFIDENT IN REACHING OUT FOR THE THINGS THAT I WANT AND NOT SETTLING FOR WHAT I AM GIVEN OR WHAT IS ON OFFER.’

PART THREE | MANAGING YOUR PLACEMENT

This workshop doesn’t just support you in accessing your perfect virtual internship, but also provides you with training in remote working, skills employers are calling critical for the future of work. We’ll show you how to manage your time, communication and project management skills to maximise your placement and show your host company just how ready you are for the world of work. The skills you learn here will enable you to join the growing nomadic work tribe as you blend your wanderlust with ability to work from every corner of the globe.

PART FOUR | PROJECT COMPLETION

It’s more than likely that your virtual internship will be project based, and therefore completed over an agreed period of time. The final part of the workshop will show you how to effectively finish your placement by gaining the relevant references and feedback for your growing portfolio. You’ll learn how to utilise the new connections made and the importance of increasing a visual portfolio of work completed to start taking further steps in your career journey.

By learning each of the four steps you’ll never need to rely on a career advisor, third party provider or recruiter to source the perfect work position for you and your work life journey.

FAQ

HOW LONG DOES THE WORKSHOP TAKE?

This workshop is as flexible as you need it to be, it could be completed in a few days or a few weeks depending on how quickly you go through the online course and materials. The coaching call lasts about 30 minutes, but after that you will guide yourself through the process and receive feedback in the online How To: Intern Virtually private studio on www.corkscrewthinking.com

WILL YOU FIND ME A PLACEMENT?

NO. We will show you how to find your own virtual internship. The value in finding your own placement is massive, what employer would want to recruit an employee that couldn’t identify and connect with an organisation directly? If you’re using a company to source you an internship online you’re not understanding the importance of finding an organisation that matches your own beliefs and values and at the end of the day you’re cheating at a valuable life lesson.

WHAT IF THE ORGANISATION SAYS NO?

The first organisation you reach out to may say no, as may the second, third, fourth or more. However, with each rejection you’re building an understanding of what doesn’t work and thus able to adapt and change until you get the answer you want. We actually advise to initially reach out to organisations you’re not that interested in, so you can develop your approach and get real time feedback with how to improve, once you’ve tested your approach and feel more confident we can then start focusing on those companies you’ve identified as matches.

CAN I GET MORE SUPPORT FROM CORKSCREW?

Yes. You get an initial coaching call with one of the Corkscrew team, but can book in for more sessions if you would like further support. Your coach will be able to give you more info on this as the workshop develops.

ARE CVs/RESUMES REALLY A WASTE?

They’re not a complete waste, as organisations may want to have a quick overview of your background and other recent experiences. However, at Corkscrew we feel that if you’re waiting for an organisation to ask for a CV before you connect with them is not going to give you the best chance of securing your dream job. Companies understand the importance of good staff and even more those staff that share their values. You should be reaching out to organisations long before you need a job and connecting with them as an equal. You don’t need a CV to ask to meet the relevant people for a coffee or to visit to find out more about the company and what they look for in a new employee.

SHOULD I PAY AN ORGANISATION TO FIND ME AN INTERNSHIP?

If you’re looking for a virtual internship we feel that you shouldn’t need to pay an organisation to find you a relevant match. The reason? There are millions of organisations online across the globe that would more than welcome the chance to recruit a virtual internship, you’re wasting your money thinking you need a third party organisation to do this. You’ll also be missing out on a key learning experience to assist in your future career development by cheating yourself by paying someone else to find you an internship. If you’re looking for an onsite internship in a company abroad then it may prove valuable to use a third party organisation as geographical barriers can prove difficult to navigate, but we struggle to believe these barriers exist online.

WHAT FIELD/SECTOR CAN I INTERN IN?

The great thing about this workshop is that it’s relevant for any sector from accounting to architecture or marketing to media. The workshop will show you how to evaluate the types of projects you can work on and assist with virtually within your chosen sector and how it will benefit your host organisation and your own development.
