A BRIEF HISTORY OF CORKSCREW THINKING

Corkscrew Thinking is not only ours and not a recent approach, it was a term first used by Sir Winston Churchill as he looked to recruit non-linear thinkers, individuals that could think outside the box and end WWII, the original Corkscrew Thinkers.

– 1939 –

Corkscrew Thinkers helped the allied forces win the second world war. During the second world war Winston Churchill declared a need for people to think differently, he referred to those people as Corkscrew Thinkers – people with the ability to break away from the traditional linear way of thinking, to think outside the box and without barriers of traditional linear thinking.

ALan turing breaks the enigma code giving the allies a significant advantage.

– 1940 –

One of Churchill’s most famous Corkscrew Thinkers was Alan Turning, famed for breaking the Enigma Code in 1940 and lending a significantly helping hand to the allies in winning WW2. One of the worlds most famous Corkscrew Minds is also generally regarded as the person behind inventing the modern computer age.

– 2010 –

Corkscrew was launched in 2010 with a new type of internship that put more emphasis on developing creativity, communication skills and confidence through the process of entrepreneurship, the first Startup Experienceship was launched later that year. At this time Corkscrew took it’s name from a metaphor for the use of a wine bottle Corkscrew, allowing a simple tool to get to the good stuff!

OUR UNIQUE STARTUP CANVAS WAS LAUNCHED TO HELP BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS TAKE THEIR FIRST STEPS.

– 2012 –

After two years of running the Startup Experienceships we launched our unique Startup Canvas to supplement our focus on helping budding entrepreneurs spark their startup idea, understand if it’s feasible (or as we say SEAMLESS) and how to launch utilising Lean Startup processes and how to harness new software and social marketing to create an MVP to test.

– 2013 –

Call it fate, call it luck or divine intervention, but in September 2013 we stumbled across an article talking about how Winston Churchill’s Corkscrew Thinking approach could be used, not just to win conflict, but in business and life.

OUR CORKSCREW WORLDS UNITE AS WE’RE INTRODUCED TO CHURCHILLS CONCEPT AND IT’S RELEVANCE TODAY.

corkscrew thinking can be embraced by all individuals and companies to own their future.

– 2014 –

2014 marked a significant development for us as we began to understand that Corkscrew Thinking could be used for more than just preparing students for their first steps into the world of work, but could inspire businesses to think differently, spark startup ideas for career changers and retirees and for educators to develop innovative curriculum for our rapidly changing world.

– 2015 –

Up until 2014 our programs had been running in the UK, it was time to take Corkscrew Thinking global! We launched our first programs outside the UK in Dublin, Berlin and Barcelona, these destinations were selected due to their innovation cultures and ability to inspire creativity and open mindedness.

berlin, barcelona and dublin are added to our growing list of cities running corkscrew programs.

We’re an organisation built with inspiring individuals, so in 2016 it was awesome to (eventually) get Andreu on board full time with the launch of Corkscrew Barcelona in 2016. Although Andreu has been involved since 2011 as an official partner in BCN it wasn’t until 2016 that it became official…we’re stoked it did!

– 2017 –

In 2017 we hit more than a 1000 participants joining Corkscrew across multiple destinations including Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, Exeter and New York. We’re super blessed that our community stay involved and see the value in Corkscrew Thinking for their future development and growth. It’s also this year we developed new partnerships with universities across the US and Europe.

1000+ COrkscrew thinkers and counting as new york and california are added to our program list.

a new corkscrew. a new community. a new brand to bring corkscrew to a new audience.

– 2018 –

2018 was one of our most exciting years as we worked to create a new platform that would make Corkscrew accessible to the masses, welcome to Corkscrew Backstage. Our new platform takes the core values of our live programs and delivers them through online courses, events and inspiration. The new platform allows us to connect together likeminded individuals to help you #OWNYOURFUTURE.

– 2019 –

Over the last 9 years we’ve seen some amazing individuals deliver programs across multiple programs and countries, we see unique ways they inspire and develop our community, but always grounded in the core values of Corkscrew Thinking. Our focus is to provide a platform for more Corkscrew Coaches to utilise our materials and help a wider audience take control of their lives.
